Chishti tradition
Sufis originated from numerous orders, lineages or chains of succession, known as silsilas and formed distinct orders – tariqas. Sufi masters, known as Shaikhs or murshids, many of whom were later considered as saints, lived in khanqahs and madrasas. Devotees (murids, saliks) came to these khanqahs to seek their blessings and to receive instructions.
